Primary Responsibilities of the Tool Repair Machinist:
Working both independently and with guidance from the Engineering/Tool Shop staff, will perform a wide variety of tasks requiring a degree of skill.
Those tasks will include but are not limited to assembly and fabrication of trim dies, repair/maintenance of existing tools, assist with equipment and tool fabrication/upgrades as needed. Will work from prints and verbal instructions to machine tight tolerance tooling.
Normal Duties of the Tool Repair Machinist:
Assemble new tooling and dies from machined subcomponents.
Sharpen and troubleshoot trim tools to make sure they meet print requirements and cut consistently.
Following safe work practices, perform tight tolerance machining of tools using typical toolroom equipment such as lathes, mills and surface grinders.Maintain associated paperwork to support quality systems.
Maintain reasonable stocks of tool steels and die sets to support business activities.
Work with Engineering to design and develop tooling and equipment upgrades to reduce costs, improve productivity or part
manufacturability.
May be required to work with outside vendors and contractors.
May be required to assist with equipment installations and upgrades.
Other duties as assigned.
Normal Working Conditions for the Tool Repair Machinist:
Will be exposed to oils, coolants, greases, maintenance and production chemicals.
High temperatures, tight working spaces, changing priorities and time restraints will not be unusual.
Required Skills, Education and Experience of the Tool Repair Machinist:
Must have demonstrable knowledge of toolmaking and machining.This knowledge will include but not be limited to the safe operation of lathes, mills, surface grinders.
Good shop math skills, ability to read blueprints and a good team player able to interface in a positive manner with co-workers, and work with a minimum of supervision.
Must be able to read prints and sketches, understand tolerances and their effects on machining parts.
Should be familiar with secondary finishing operations such as heat treating and tempering and their effects on parts so as to take those operations into consideration when fabricating tooling.
Should have a combination of education and experience as follows:
Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program and 1 year experience in tool fabrication, or 2 year degree or certificate in tooling/machining from a recognized education organization and 1-3 years increasing experience
or 4 – 6 years increasing experience in a tool room environment.
Or Accepted as a Tool Repair Apprentice
1. Training in shop math, tooling theory, blueprint reading and basic machine operation required.
2. Training to be provided by area supervisor and lead person.
3. Advancement from Apprentice to Tool Repair /Machinist dependent on successful completion of studies.
