Schedule for the Toolmaker/Machinist:
- 5:30am-3pm
- Monday-Friday
- $32/hr
Primary Responsibilities of the Toolmaker/Machinist:
Working independently, will perform a wide variety of tasks requiring a high degree of skill. Those tasks will include but are not limited to, design and fabrication of trim dies, working from prints to machine tight tolerance tooling, repair/maintenance of existing tools, assist with equipment and tool fabrication/upgrades as needed.
Normal Duties of the Toolmaker/Machinist:
- Following safe work practices, perform tight tolerance machining of tools using typical toolroom equipment such as lathes, mills (manual and CNC) and surface grinders.
- Must be capable working with solid models and of programming CNC machine centers.
- Must be able to read prints and sketches, understand tolerances and their affects on machining parts.
- Should be familiar with metallurgy; be able to assist in recommendations for tooling materials.
- Must be familiar with secondary finishing operations such as heat treating and tempering and their affects on parts so as to take those operations into consideration when fabricating tooling.
- Maintain associated paperwork to support ISO/TS-16949 initiative.
- Maintain reasonable stocks of tool steels and die sets to support business activities.
- Work with Engineering to design and develop tooling and equipment upgrades to reduce costs, improve productivity or part manufacturability.
- May be required to work with outside vendors and contractors.Other duties as assigned.
Normal Working Conditions of the Toolmaker/Machinist:
- Will be exposed to oils, coolants, greases, maintenance and production chemicals.
- High temperatures, tight working spaces and time restraints will not be unusual.
- May be required to assist with equipment installations and upgrades.
Required Skills, Education and Experience for the Toolmaker/Machinist:
- Must have significant, demonstratable knowledge of toolmaking, machining and tool design.
- This knowledge will include but not be limited to the safe operation of, lathes, mills, surface grinders both manual and CNC versions thereof.
Ideal candidates for the Toolmaker/Machinist should have a combination of education and experience as follows:
Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program and 3-5 years increasing experience in tool fabrication, or 2 year degree or certificate in tooling/machining from a recognized education organization and 5-7 years increasing experience or 8-10 years increasing experience in a toolroom environment.
