  • Assists Group leader in writing new or changing existing Setup Sheets. May assist Engineering in developing new processes and trying out new tooling.
  • Participate in the corrective action process to prevent defects from recurring.

Position Overview 

Welds together metal components of products, as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work order, welding procedures, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Reads shop travelers to determine processes. Reads and understands welding schedules.
  • Selects proper welding equipment and locates fixtures as instructed on the welding schedules provided.
  • Locates or constructs necessary gas containment plugs and supply lines as required.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joint or workpiece. Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Prepares workpieces by scoring or sanding when required. Clean and grind welds, if required, after welding and inspections.
  • Set up machine by setting up cables from welding unit and setting amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by product Setup sheets.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode as indicated on work instructions.
  • Positions and clamps workpieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture. May tack assemblies together. Installs argon plugs and piping if necessary.
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current. Strikes (forms) arc to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of workpiece. Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • Manually feeds filler rod into arc on TIG jobs.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examines his own work by inspecting welds for bead size and other specifications. Uses various inspection tools to inspect part for critical dimensions.
  • Follows Operator Acceptance Plan when completing paperwork and signing off procedures.
