Learning from Each Other

Here are some top tips for male and female managers from experts at BusinessWeek Online and Catalyst, a publication of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. These insights may help you improve your own management style as you adopt the best strategies from both the pink and blue teams.

DON'T BE A CONTROL-FREAK
Give your people the power and the permission to do their jobs. Try not to micro-manage. Delegate, delegate, delegate.

FLEXIBILITY, NOT RIGIDITY
Learn to allow your employees to shape and to some extent create their jobs. Invite communication. Don't scoff at an idea simply because it's not your own. Be open to others' opinions and build consensus.

ADMIT YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING
Give your staff permission to disagree with you and express their own ideas. Then listen and keep listening. You can't solve all of your problems, but your staff probably can if you're open to their suggestions.

DON'T BE SO DARNED MODEST
If you don't toot your own horn, nobody else will. When you get the job done – and especially if it's something to brag about – consider crowing a little. Above all, make sure your boss knows what you've done.

GO GET 'EM!
Pursue high visibility assignments and advancement opportunities. If you hear of a project that interests you, then come up with a solid, creative plan for executing it. Then approach your boss with it. Show your boss you're willing to take charge when you need to.

BE A RISK-TAKER
Show off your 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!' attitude by taking on new and tough assignments. Assignments that stretch you can yield defining moments in a career.
